Blood and tears smear UT police motto
CHANDIGARH: "We care for you," the police say, splattering the high-sounding motto across the city. But they haven't exactly cared for 20-year-old Uma, who was widowed when a truck sped over Vijayant Singh on February 26.
For the last 10 days Uma, who has a child just six months old, has been running from pillar to post because a callous police will not revise a faulty FIR.

Vijayant's life came to an abrupt end when a canter hit his two-wheeler near Golf Club in Sector 6, killing him on the spot. He was just 23.
To make matters worse for a family already reeling under such unexpected tragedy, the police station at Sector 3 is steadfastly refusing to rectify a crucial error the investigating officer (IO) made, an error which could come between justice and make a travesty of it.
In the FIR, the IO wrongly entered the two-wheeler's number as "HR03G4344", instead of the original "HR30G4334".
And though this may seem like an innocuous oversight by the IO, Subash Chandra, it could well mean that when the case comes up for hearing, the court will just dump it.
The logic is simple: if Vijayant was not driving the two-wheeler mentioned in the FIR, why should the court entertain pleas for compensation or imprisonment of the driver for rash driving.

Distraught, the family of Vijayant -and, in fact, residents of village Kharag Mangoli in Old Panchkula -has written to UT SSP Gaurav Yadav seeking his intervention on the issue.
"More than anything else, it really hurts that such a trivial mistake in the FIR could ultimately lead to denial of justice to my family. The person who caused my son's death could go free," said Pramod Singh, the father of Vijayant.
"All I want is that the case should be properly fought in court. And for that to happen, the FIR needs to be corrected."
Sector 3 SHO Balhar Singh said such "minor mistakes" could be corrected and that he would meet the victim's family on Tuesday evening.
A widow, a toddler and a whole village are waiting.
